Overachiever is a web application for tracking and managing gaming achievements across Xbox and Steam. It provides a unified dashboard where users can view achievement progress, compare completion statistics, and organize their gaming history across multiple platforms. The project integrates external gaming APIs to collect achievement data and presents it through a centralized interface.
Motivation
I built Overachiever to solve a problem common among players who use multiple gaming platforms: achievement progress is fragmented across different ecosystems. Xbox and Steam each provide their own achievement systems, but there is no single place to view a complete gaming profile. In addition, I wanted to provide a platform which users can share their progress, contribute achievement guides, and compare their gaming accomplishments with friends. Finally, I wanted to provide a public-facing application that performs better than the Xbox web and mobile interface, which is slow and difficult to navigate when viewing large collections of games and achievements, and requires a user to be logged in to a Microsoft account.
The goal was to build a full-stack application that combines API integration, data processing, user accounts, and visualization into a practical product rather than a simple API wrapper.
Technical Highlights
- Built a full-stack web application for tracking Xbox and Steam achievements.
- Integrated external gaming APIs to retrieve user profiles, games, achievements, and completion data.
- Designed a database schema for storing and organizing user achievement history.
- Implemented data synchronization workflows to keep achievement information up to date.
- Created dashboards for viewing completion progress and gaming statistics.
- Developed backend services for authentication, API communication, and data processing.
- Designed a responsive user interface focused on quickly navigating large collections of games and achievements.
- Considered privacy and compliance requirements when handling user data, including GDPR and CCPA considerations.
Challenges
The biggest challenge was handling data from multiple platforms with different APIs, data formats, and limitations. Xbox and Steam represent achievement data differently, requiring a normalization layer to convert platform-specific responses into a consistent internal model.
Another challenge was designing the database and synchronization logic to efficiently handle large achievement libraries while avoiding unnecessary API requests. Steam achievement icons are very large and require careful handling to avoid excessive bandwidth usage, and XBox 360 achievement icons are not available via a public API. These limitations were overcome by caching, downscaling, and storing achievement icons locally, and by using Steam achievement icons as a fallback for Xbox achievements.
What I Learned
Overachiever expanded my experience with full-stack application development, third-party API integration, database design, and building user-facing software around real-world data sources.
The project also provided experience with the less glamorous but essential parts of production software: handling authentication, external service failures, data consistency, and privacy considerations.
Future Work
- Add support for additional gaming platforms.
- Expand achievement statistics and player analytics.
- Implement social features such as friend comparisons and leaderboards.
- Improve recommendation features based on incomplete achievements.
- Add background processing for more efficient achievement synchronization.
